Notes and Editorial Reviews
The name Cécile Ousset may not be on the tip of pianophiles' tongues when it comes to recommending modern-day Chopin recordings. Yet her excellent 1986/87 recordings of the Second and Third sonatas (complete with exposition repeats), the four Scherzos, and the four Ballades are not only worth owning but also add up to an amazing bargain via EMI's two-for-one Gemini series. Her assertive, forward-moving pianism lacks nothing in the way of color, narrative flow, and scintillation. Perhaps you'll miss Argerich's high-octane momentum in the Third Sonata, but on the other hand you won't get the fussy, superfluous rubatos that marr Ashkenazy's mid-1970s recording. The Ballades and Scherzos are also world-class in every respect, although the
Fourth Scherzo is represented by lighter, suppler accounts from Richter and Ashkenazy, and the Fourth Ballade's opening pages yield more mystery in the hands of Arrau, Moravec, and Horowitz. In all, Ousset's solid artistry, together with EMI's superb sound and budget price, add up to a bargain for Chopin lovers.
