Notes and Editorial Reviews

Volume 4 of Ashkenazy's Schumann is a generous helping of masterpieces. (The relatively little-known Blumenstück is brief, six minutes long, an attractive lyrical piece.) Ashkenazy is a poetic Schumann player, which provides for a great deal of what I want to hear in the music. His concluding section of the Davidsbündlertänze, for example, is quite beautifully played and seems almost to suspend time. In the Phantasiestücke, he tosses off Traumes-Wirren quite briskly (although not as feathery-light as Richter) and Warum is sensitively sung.
