Gimell has repackaged its catalog very effectively, finding themes to focus its programs and filling the discs to the brim. The latest is a broad cross-section of its catalog to illustrate the progress of Renaissance music over the airwaves from almost nothing to a prominent place today. The two discs divide the Continental composers from the insular to display the kinds of music that the Tallis Scholars have recorded in the last 33 of their 40 years, for this is as much an anniversary offering as a bow to the broadcast programmers.

Admittedly, previous reissues have been neatly focused to bring together music of Byrd or Palestrina, for example. This goes to the opposite extreme in displaying the breadth of the group’s repertoire. In order to cover the ground, movements are extracted from Masses and, least worthily, Allegri’s Miserere is shorn of half its verses, leaving only beginning and end. It’s worth noting that under Steve C. Smith’s supervision, the work of five different engineers (identified) in four churches (also identified) over a period of 40 years (specified only by dates of original issue) is impressively uniform, as is the fine vocal production of an ensemble that has been made up of over 60 singers (all named, though Donald Greig’s name is misspelled once more). I’m not sure what audience is contemplated for this package. Some whose collections focus on a narrow area (say, the Tudor era) may hear how the group sounds elsewhere (say, Spanish or Flemish music). It certainly would serve as an interesting sampler for a non-specialist in early music. Well done.
