Notes and Editorial Reviews

The performances of this marvelous music by Patrizia Ciofi and Joyce Di Donato can be summed up in a single word — glorious.

"At the heart of the recital is a sequence from Poro featuring a pair of lovers—the eponymous hero and the Indian princess Cleofide—who experience both love and jealously as a result of Cleofide’s feigned affection for Alessandro (Alexander the Great). In the act I aria, “Se mai più sarò geloso,” Poro promises to try to curb his jealously, which is in turn assuaged by Cleofide’s beautiful “Se mai turbo” (a text also memorably set by Hasse in his Cleofide, which appeared in 1731, the same year as Poro). Later in the same act, Poro’s jealousy once more boils over, and in the
Read more ensuing duet the pair mock each other’s previous affirmations by quoting the other’s aria. Early in act II the two at least temporarily resolve their differences in the ravishingly lovely lines of “Caro amico amplesso!”

Elsewhere, we are treated to joyous, carefree love in the duet between Rinaldo and Almirena, and the excitement of illicit sensual love in the impetuously buoyant duet from the opening scene of Flavio, while love becomes the subject of painful parting in the duet from Rodelinda, enforced parting in Faramondo, heroic parting due to war in Teseo, and confusion in the wonderfully dramatic exchanges between Atalanta and Meleagro from the otherwise largely undistinguished Atalanta. But nowhere is it more fervently expressed than in the Sosarme duet, a gem celebrating the power of love to overcome adversity. At the other extreme is “Finché prendi,” one of Handel’s rare duets of total opposition. Here, the increasingly crazed outbursts of the jealous Orlando stand in direct polarity to the heartbroken utterances of an Angelica convinced he has murdered her lover Medoro.

The performances of this marvelous music by Patrizia Ciofi and Joyce Di Donato can be summed up in a single word—glorious. From the outset, the singing is suffused with a warmth, tonal richness, and dramatic conviction that carry the listener on a wave of near-ecstatic enchantment, the voices blending as if in a combination preordained by heaven. Alan Curtis’s support befits his preeminent stature among today’s Handel opera conductors; his fingerprints can also be detected in the superbly pointed and dramatic way in which introductory secco recitative is handled. My only regret is that Il Complesso Barocco has here been reduced to single-strings-per-part, presumably on economic grounds, a great pity since it would have been more satisfying to hear the lustrous voices of Ciofi and Di Donato supported by a fuller, richer body of strings. No matter. Ultimately this disc belongs to the two ladies. And how! Every lover of great singing (and, yes, I do mean great singing) should obtain a copy of this disc without delay."
