Notes and Editorial Reviews

Claude Le Jeune (c. 1530?1600) was known for Huguenot psalms as well as Catholic liturgical music and chansons. This vocal ensemble gave us an earlier collection of chansons (9:6) and a disc of his Mass and motets (20:5). The new disc complements the first one, which used a lute and the viols of Les Éléments to accompany the voices and insert a few instrumental pieces for contrast. Now the voices are heard unadorned. One song was well worth duplicating from the first program, Je suis déshéritée , for which Le Jeune took a song of Pierre Cadéac and added five more voices. Cadéac's melody also appealed to Palestrina, who composed a parody Mass on Read more it.

The highlight of the collection is the first recording known to me of La guerre , an extended 17-minute account of an amorous conquest in which the extended metaphor is ingeniously pursued. The other 15 songs are much briefer, one of the briefest being a six-line verse that begins and ends, Autant en emporte le vent, giving the disc its title. But did Margaret Mitchell really find the title of her novel in this song, as the notes imply? In any case, the singers are thoroughly at home in the idiom.
