Notes and Editorial Reviews

The present, fourth setting was discovered only in the 19th Century, and is recorded here complete for the first time... Serene but poignant simplicity which Bruno Turner captures admirably with spacious tempi... The quality of the singing from a group of eight is of a high order. So is the recording.  Excellent Recording Highly Recommended December 22, 2014 By Clifford H C. (Thompson, MB) See All My Reviews "Palestrina: Lamentations of Jeremiah Book 4 – Bruno Turner, Pro Cantione Antiqua Giovanni da Palestrina 1525-1594 have a love/hate relationship. Much of what I had heard during our first introduction was marvellously symmetric and quite plain. When compared with contemporaries operating outside of the Vatican, his music was flat and seemed quite safe. These Lamentations and several other recent recording have made me change my point of view. They are fierce and desolate. The all-male Pro Cantione Antiqua do a wonderful rendition of this sorrowful music. These singers have to stretch their vocal ranges to the absolute maximum adding wonderful ripples to the absolute perfect harmonies. This recording shows why Palestrina was the ‘’Go To Guy’’ during the high renaissance. The recording is excellent even after all of these years and has a wonderful rich sound that does not interfere or muddle the singing." Report Abuse
Mournful music February 25, 2014 By R. Mason (Walnut Creek, CA) See All My Reviews "Palestrina's church music ... not exactly what I expected from one of my favorite Baroque composers, but that's my fault. A little heavy for easy listening." Report Abuse
