Royal Fireworks Music is the best of the selectio February 21, 2015 By m. jefferson (Birmingham, AL) See All My Reviews "I bought this CD for two reasons: GF Handel is my favorite composer of all and I love these 2 main selections-Water Music & Royal Fireworks music-but also I have just a few works with Steinberg as conductor. However, the winner of conductors on this compilation of works is Sir Charles Mackerras/LSO, performing the Royal Firworks Music. The arraignment Sir Charles used is very similar to the Hogwood/AAM from 1979, only the tempo of the overture is slower paced at 12 minutes while Hogwood's is at around 9:30 minutes; but the LSO performs the rest of the suite very, very well. Steinberg's arraignment of the Water Music isn't close to any other recording I have ever heard from any conductor. The endings of the selections just were not what I had anticipated at all. I'm giving this CD a 3-star rating only because Sir Charles Mackerras "saved the day" (or the recordings)." Report Abuse
