Bernstein’s recordings of these works with the Viennese show Brahms through the lens of Tristan. The conductor’s flowing, almost achingly prolonged interpretations emphasize the lyrical aspect of the music, bringing at times a rather fruity expressiveness to the accounts, but for the most part achieving quite lovely results. Occasionally, for example in the finale to the Third, the conductor
Read more seems to stand in the way a bit, emphasizing detail at the expense of momentum. Perhaps no other orchestra in the world could do the job the VPO does here, bending and drawing out the line without breaking it, and giving Bernstein every nuance he asks for.
