Read more /> Talk about sensory overload—this CD contains what are, arguably, the four most beautiful scenes of Der Rosenkavalier superbly sung by three excellent artists under an indulgent conductor. We get the opening scene nearly up to the entrance of Baron Ochs, who is nowhere to be found on the collection. After this, the action proceeds to the Marschallin’s “Da geht er hin, der aufgeblasene schlechte Kerl” and continues to the end of the act. Even back in 1964, when these excerpts were recorded, Crespin had her Marschallin act down pat and, fortunately, recorded the entire role under Georg Solti four years later. Next, we come to Octavian’s arrival at Faninal’s mansion and the subsequent scene where he and Sophie discover that they love each other…bad news for the Baron. I saw Söderström do a sweet, if spunky, Sophie and she’s every bit as good as an ardent Octavian. Hilde Gueden could probably have sung Sophie in her sleep. The final excerpt begins with Ochs’s departure from the inn and proceeds to the end of the opera. Faninal’s single contribution is “Sind halt aso, die jungen Leut” just before he escorts the Marschallin from the inn. Varviso is quite willing to linger over the music and the playing of the Vienna Philharmonic may have provided an irresistible temptation to do so. As usual, the recording site was the Sofiensaal where it was probably difficult to make a bad recording once Decca/London figured the place out.
