Notes and Editorial Reviews

Itzhak Perlman is a famous violinist for many reasons, but perhaps the standout is his incomparably lively tone. The violin, more than most other instruments, exhibits a tone equal to the skill level of the musician playing it, and Perlman makes the instrument sing. This trait is apparent throughout this excellent recording, due to the short and lyrical nature of the selections. There is much here to be enjoyed: Tchaikovsky shines in small media such as this, and two tuneful, slow selections of his are beautifully done. "Estrellita" by Ponce is a lovely piece that must be heard again. Music by others such as Dvorak and Granados present a lively ethnic flavor, along with traditional pieces such as Wieniawski's Caprice in A minor. The piano Read more playing of Samuel Sanders is noteworthy as well, and the two musicians obviously share a rapport. The absence of longer pieces is noticeable, but beyond that the program is excellent. Read less
