Notes and Editorial Reviews

The major news in the 19th volume of Chandos’s “Grainger Edition” is the first recording of the so-called Bridal Lullaby Ramble, a work transcribed (we’re not told by whom) from an improvised elaboration of the Bridal Lullaby set down on a piano roll by Grainger in 1918. It’s a magnificent discovery, filled with over-ripe harmonies and elaborate ornamentation, but set out with such disarming indolence that, as in the superficially similar Ramble on Love, you hardly bridle at the excess. Otherwise, the bulk of the material here is well known—and the few remaining premieres are merely simplified versions of such chestnuts as the “Lullaby” from Tribute to Foster, Country Gardens and Irish Tune from County Derry, versions that seem (perversely) Read more to remove everything characteristically Graingeresque from the standard versions.

Thwaites’s current interpretive approach to Grainger is familiar, too, from earlier installments in the series. Although she’s generally more expeditious than she was on her low-key 1992 potpourri for Unicorn-Kanchana, she’s still far from a nervy pianist: more attuned to Grainger the sensualist than to Grainger the upstart, she gives precedence to color over virtuoso display, harmony over rhythm. Yes, there are a few interpretive surprises—some positive (her dark, even stormy performance of Blithe Bells, her refreshingly clattery reading of Immovable Do), some less engaging (her stiff account of the full version of the “Lullaby” from Tribute to Foster, with its overly aggressive tremolos). But for the most part, those who have heard the earlier installments will not be surprised to discover that Thwaites is heard to better advantage in her artfully molded performance of To a Nordic Princess and her deliciously lush account of Now, Oh Now I Needs Must Part than, say, in “Lord Peter’s Stable Boy” (the closing section of Jutish Medley).

All in all, though, this repertoire is generally well suited to Thwaites’s temperament—and although I doubt it was necessary to add the pianist’s transcription of The Power of Love to a series that already contains three of Grainger’s own arrangements, this lushly recorded disc can be warmly welcomed. Don’t, however, forget Martin Jones’s more sharply etched cycle on Nimbus and, in a class of its own, Hamelin’s recital for Hyperion.
