Darius Milhaud was one of the most important members of Les Six, the group of young French composers centered around Erik Satie about 1917. These composers were interested in freeing French music from impressionism, so they turned to styles coming from more popular tastes, such as Spanish style, jazz, dance-hall music, and cabaret. Such influences can be heard in this selection from the large opus of Milhaud.
The listener will note the successful use of these styles throughout the set, for instance in the jazzy frivolity of the famous "Le Boeuf sur le toit," the use of the blues in 'La Création du monde,' and the tango motif in the "Souvenier de Rio" from 'Le Carnaval d'Aix.'
