Shostakovich always had a knack for irritating the Soviet regime. Yet it seems that the bad luck he had of being a composer working under an authoritarian regime paradoxically brought out the best in him. But Shostakovich was also complex individual and in this CD we are treated to some of his most emotional music. Certainly the Tenth Symphony is one of his supreme achievements and happens to be one of his works that, if not quite pleasing the authorities because of its unrelenting bleak tone, it has stood the test of time. No doubt the forbidding, drum-spitting Allegro, which is given an appropriately frenzied yet stately performance by Previn, did much to make the authorities take notice. But it was the Thirteenth Symphony of 1962 that alarmed Krushchev and the Communist Party such that the piece was quickly removed from the repertoire after a handful of performances. Essentially a symphonic song cycle for baritone and orchestra, it was the first movement and Yevtushenko's poems, specifically the first movement--which accused the Communist regime of anti-Semitism--that brought down the wrath of the authorities. Dimiter Petkov is in fine form here for a work that is alternately stark and sardonic. |
