Notes and Editorial Reviews

This comprehensive 3-DVD box explores the life, times, and work of Charles Dickens, the great Victorian author. Dickens is undoubtedly one of the great literary geniuses of all time. Yet, there is much about Dickens’s incredible life that remains unknown. His is a fascinating story; from rags to riches, complete with bankruptcy, prison, forced child labor, and fame and fortune, overshadowed by guilt and secrecy. This DVD set demonstrates how much Dickens drew upon his own experiences in his fiction.

The cast includes Anton Lesser, Daniel Radcliffe, Prunella Scales, Timothy West, Michael Elphick, Trevor Eve, Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Zoë Wanamaker, and Ian Mckellen.

R E V I E W S:

“Anton Lesser made an emotionally charged, almost tremulous, Dickens, especially recreating the writer's inspirational public readings.” – Paul Hoggart, The Times

"Anton Lesser is tremendous as Dickens himself, making you understand why his public readings were so popular. Lesser makes it sound as if Dickens is talking to you, whether in the reconstructed interviews or reading from his books. The mix of fiction and fact pays off in his speeches and in moments of the drama and that makes this an absorbing, even engrossing biography." – BBC News Read less

Well done! January 22, 2014 By P. Ledesma (Wellington, KS) See All My Reviews "The authenticity and care that went into these productions were top notch! But the darkness and portrayals of cruelty in several scenes seemed excessive, though they were arguably true to the author's vision. Very well done is all aspects, but parts were difficult for me to enjoy. But the integrity that flavors this set still compels me to give it my recommendation." Report Abuse
