Notes and Editorial Reviews

If you missed this beautiful album when it was originally released in the mid 1980s, EMI has given you a second chance. As part of its “Encore” series it comes back at a budget price; this time with an essentials-only booklet that offers a brief description of each composer and operetta, no lyrics, and 25 percent of the booklet space devoted to advertising other titles in the “Encore” series. Never mind the Spartan notes; just listening to Domingo’s ardent singing supported by Rudel’s sympathetic conducting is reward enough. The album title “Vienna, City of My Dreams,” comes from Rudolk Sieczynski’s song Wien, du Stadt meiner Träume (track 5), and is the only selection not extracted from a Viennese operetta. All of the material was Read more written between 1883 (Eine Nacht in Venedig) to 1929 (Das Land des Lächelns). These works exist in the musical field between opera and musical comedy; the selections included in this disc show the maturing of the genre from the frothy comedies populated by two-dimensional characters to the romances filled with soaring melodies and increasingly three-dimensional characters. Are these selections schmaltzy? Well, sure they are. Isn’t that why we love them? Good melodies, “I love you” sung with unabashed sentimentality. They work best when handled with taste and sincerity, which is what Domingo and Rudel bring to these 11 selections. It’s a beautiful album; it falls pleasantly on the ears, and doesn’t wear out its welcome.

For people who love Viennese operetta and want a disc of favorite tenor moments, “Vienna, City of My Dreams” is highly recommended. The warm and spacious sound also deserves a favorable mention.
