Gabrieli Echoes Anew October 9, 2017 By d. jewell (Binghamton, NY) See All My Reviews "Eric Crees and the London Symphony Brass have recorded three cd’s worth of the music of Gabrieli, of which this is volume 2 and they make a more than worthy addition to the repertory. Recorded in a moderately reverberant acoustic, they are nevertheless performed with an extraordinary clarity of line, yet never lose the sense of weighty ensemble that is needed with this music. It is easy enough to hear performances of these works that tend toward plainness of expression – but these performances abound with expressiveness and evident thoughtfulness of the music’s underlying meanings. The sonatas no. 18 and 19, for example, have a clarity of expression yet are nuanced and given greater depth by the care with which they are presented. All in all these are more than excellent additions to the recorded legacy of Gabrieli and should rank with legendary recordings such as the Cleveland/Philadelpia/Chicago and Canadian Brass."
