Notes and Editorial Reviews

Montreal Symphony Orchestra/Charles Dutoit. London 425 502-2 [Nocturnes, with Images pour orchestre (complete)] and 430 240-2 [La mer and Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune with Jeux and orchestral excerpts from Le Martyre de saint Sébastien] (recorded 1988-89)

Several years after their landmark recordings of Ravel’s orchestral music, Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony got around to Debussy, with results that were certainly worth waiting for. The Swiss-born Dutoit may strike some listeners as “laid back” and ever so slightly clinical, but that’s the way he likes to make music. These readings are always under control, which at times can make them seem a little unemotional, as though the music
Read more were almost too familiar. But whenever there is a danger of ordinariness setting in, Dutoit and the band heat things up.

The Nocturnes are impeccably rendered. There is extreme refinement in “Nuages,” color and energy aplenty in “Fêtes,” languor and mystery in “Sirènes.” More of an outdoorsman than a hedonist when it comes to La mer, Dutoit emphasizes body and voluptuousness of sound over atmosphere and strives for an effect of photographic realism rather than impressionism. Ultimately, it is the score of La mer, not the sea itself, that the conductor is interested in projecting, but what a glorious noise he makes in this account. Here and in every other piece on these discs, the playing of the Montreal orchestra exhibits a virtuosity that is all the more remarkable for sounding unspectacular. These are among the best recorded performances of Debussy’s music in the catalog, close-miked but with ample space, vivid, and well balanced. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
