A really gorgeous GiselleJanuary 29, 2015By Lilian W. (San Rafael, CA)See All My Reviews"The finest filmed performance of Giselle that I've seen since the justly famous one in 1969, with Carla Fracci and Erik Bruhn. This one has better camera work, however, and makes the viewer feel almost like part of the theatre audience (the views inside the historic La Scala theatre are also lovely). The only minus is that the stage lighting is a little too dark at times- in keeping with the atmosphere and story, but inconvenient for the viewer. Fortunately, these moments are brief. The two principals are perfectly matched, both technically and emotionally; and the dancer playing Myrtha, queen of the wilis (ghosts), is as light as air and as cold as ice, exactly right. Although I sometimes find the audience in a filmed performance to be distracting, this was not the case, fortunately. The clapping wasn't intrusive, and there was no loud coughing. This is a real treat, gorgeous dancing, costumes, etc., and I hope Arkiv keeps it available-it's been hard to obtain at a decent price till now."Report Abuse
