Notes and Editorial Reviews

[David Russell's] tone is attractive, his technique beautifully clean. And yet there’s ne’er a whiff of the clinical here – even in the development, which is perhaps not as exciting as Bream’s or Romero’s, there are a clarity and depth that generate their own tensions. Clarity there is too from Kunzel and the orchestra, with some of the less salient lines given extra definition to enrich the overall texture of the sound... His is a more subtle intelligence; never one to wear his heart on his sleeve, he uses his sublime technique to speak plainly and openly... [H]is humour is gentle, his colours more muted. The emphasis is still on tone quality and getting the sense of the music just right without too much fuss – the master-craftsman at Read more work.

Warm Evocations of Spain June 2, 2017 By owen  ryan (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "Rodrigo passed away at age 98 just two years after these recordings were made. These are beautiful performances by soloist and orchestra. The recordings, from 1999, are far superior to earlier Telarc releases. I compared this disc to a Phillip's compilation of performances by the Romero bros. with Neville Marriner and the ASMF. While it might seem like heresy to some, I like these performances and the superior recording better than those classic mid to late 70s Phillips recordings. A recommended CD for your pleasure."
