Excellent Performance January 18, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Known as the originator of the Russian opera tradition, Mikhail Glinka followed up his initial success (A Life For The Tsar)with this Russian fairy tale-like work. The libretto tells the story of the search for a missing Ukrainian princess by a trio of knights, each of which seeks her hand. With an exciting, brilliant orchestral score as its foundation, Ruslan and Ludmilla makes an early statement of Russian nationalism, which is especially and clearly evident in the final chorus. Valery Gergiev leads the forces of St. Petersburg's Kirov Opera in a 1995 recording of a live performance at the Mariinsky Theater. I found the overall sonic quality of the recording, including the singing, to be slightly 'boxy', perhaps due to the acoustics of the performance venue. While this somewhat reduces the sense of openness and spaciousness in the singers' roles, it by no means makes for difficult listening. Overall, this is a high quality recording of a work which probably doesn't get much Western exposure, beyond the famous overture and possibly the orchestral dance sequences. I'm confident that this Kirov Ruslan and Ludmilla will be an enjoyable listen for serious opera buffs." Report Abuse
A Gem Of An Opera October 12, 2012 By Stephen Schoeman (Westfield, NJ) See All My Reviews "Glinka's Rusian And Lyudmila is a gem of an opera! It should be in the standard repertoire of every opera company but, sadly, it is not. Glinka's opera was a seminal work in the history of Russian opera. And for good reason! There are the great arias, the great choruses, and the breath-taking ballet music! It's a story to match Mozart's Magic Flute for fantasy. And every bit as good an opera! The performance is first rate. And even more than first rate. The opera world is being short-changed because this opera and so many others are rarely if ever heard and they should be. There is greatness in Russian opera as in Czech opera, as in Spanish opera, as in Danish opera. Let's start hearing this greatness. One place to start is to go through the enormous ArchivMusic collection and purchase some of this opera and then sit back and be amazed and cultivated by these wonderful works. Stephen Schoeman, Ph.
