Notes and Editorial Reviews

Herbert Blomstedt and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig are almost ideal interpreters of Anton Bruckner's music, and this super audio release on Querstand is a splendid presentation of the Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, due to its vibrant and communicative performance and deep, spacious sound. Of all of Bruckner's vast symphonies, the Fifth is the most rigorously structured and carefully developed on clearly stated themes, and Blomstedt's discipline and control hold the music together along its trajectory, despite the potential pitfalls of numerous pauses, sudden key changes, and other hazards. The orchestra plays with alertness, clarity, and high energy, and Blomstedt urges it forward to build and sustain momentum, which is practically the Read more symphony's raison d'être, since the three early movements act as an extended build-up for the magnificent fugue in the finale. In addition to its formal and contrapuntal aspects, this is a powerful expression of Bruckner's emotional world, which some have taken to be deeply religious (the Fifth has sometimes been tagged with the unofficial nickname, "Church of Faith"). But in a sense, the impulse behind the work can be understood in the experience of its majesty and gravitas, and the Fifth can be appreciated best as absolute music. The superb reproduction of this SACD really matches the grandeur of the music, so audiophiles and Brucknerians alike will be overwhelmed by the riches contained here. Highly recommended.

Good Performance, OK Sound July 6, 2014 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "Blomstedt is an experienced Bruckner conductor, and one might expect this new performance with modern sound would stand out among other recent recordings of this work. I found the first three movements to be well paced and beautifully played by the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Small details often missed in other recordings turn up from time to time, adding further interest. The fourth movement is the culmination of this symphony, where all the thematic threads come together in the grandest of codas. But in this live performance the conductor chose to emphasize drums rather than the brass at the conclusion, and the recording sounds muddy to my ears. It does not compare well to the much older but excellent recordings by Klempeerer or by Chailly." Report Abuse
wonderful December 18, 2013 By k. robertson (london, ON) See All My Reviews "As Many other listeners I cut my Bruckner teeth on the more popular Symphonies,4,7 and 9......however once discovering 5 was completely taken by his genius. I have enjoyed many recordings of this Symphony, to note, Sinopoli,Thieleman and Welser-Most and this one ranks right up there. Great pacing and wonderful Orchestral playing ranks this in the upper echelon of Bruckner 5's Highly recommended !" Report Abuse
