Notes and Editorial Reviews

The role of Aida, the Ethiopian slave serving in the palace of the king of Egypt, was particularly identified with the great Verdi soprano, Leontyne Price. She recorded it twice and this performance from 1970 was her second, finding her once again in commanding form, adding a few new wrinkles and surrounded by a solid cast. Tenor Placido Domingo is strong and suave as Radames, captain of Pharoah's guards and Aida's beloved, while mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry is outstandingly resourceful as the hateful Amneris, princess of Egypt and Aida's rival for the affections of Radames. They receive excellent support throughout from the London Symphony Orchestra and John Alldis Choir, led by the knowing hand of maestro Erich Leinsdorf.
