Notes and Editorial Reviews

Boston Symphony Orchestra/Charles Munch. RCA Victor Gold Seal 6719-2-RG [La mer, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and “Nuages” and “Fêtes” from Nocturnes, with Printemps] (La mer recorded 1956; others 1962). Reissued.

During the years it was under the command of Charles Munch – and long before that – the Boston Symphony was the best French orchestra in the world. Fortunately, Munch and the Bostonians recorded plenty of French repertory while they were together, and got from RCA the benefit of some of the cleanest early stereo in the marketplace. Munch was an excitable, spontaneous musician, one who gave everything to his performances and never conducted a piece the same way twice. There is a
Read more wonderfully organic quality to this account of La mer – it is “live,” urgent, quite passionate (especially in the finale), but not overstated. The reading of the Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is one of the classics of the catalog, a rhapsodic, superbly virtuosic affair with a sultry warmth in every bar. The two Nocturnes – how we wish there were a “Sirènes” to go with them – are the essence of Gallic élan and tastefulness. RCA’s recordings are excellent; while a certain amount of tape hiss is noticeable, particularly in La mer, the presence, balance, and sense of space are wonderful. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
