Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's interesting to note that Neeme Järvi recorded quite a bit of Stravinsky for Chandos--eight or nine discs' worth, most of it very good, and none better than these performances of Jeu de cartes and Orpheus. Indeed, these can rightly claim a place as reference recordings of the works in question, not just for Järvi's idiomatic, straight-ahead conducting, but for the sensational playing of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. To listen to the winds in the former's "Third Deal" or to the fantastically light but precise strings in Orpheus is to enter Stravinskian heaven. The Suite from Histoire du soldat doesn't quite share the same level of executional excellence, but it's pretty fine all the same and it
Read more represents a generous addition to the two ballets on the original release. If you missed these richly recorded performances the first time around, don't make the same mistake twice.
