Sublime Solemnity of Angelic Chant November 20, 2012 By Edie Wu (Thousand Oaks, CA) See All My Reviews "Om, Peace, Bliss Those for whom liturgical, devotional, sacred and melodic chant music, that transcends simple "listening" and beckons more the heart, I believe will enjoy the precious depth the journey within that connects one's spirit Thomas Tallis' sacred music evokes. Tracks 1, 13 + 14 were especially reminescent to this listener of cloistered sounds of monks and evocative as highly sacred, pure, hallowed, and penitent, but no track falls short of pleasing to the spirit. Repeated phrasing, an especially key element and why this listener appreciates medieval, polyphonic chant, particularly those angelic sounds reflecting lofty and divine dimension, can be meditative and draws the mind away from the mental and material realm of daily life bringing a focus that ignites with spirit, and even deeper into the inner recesses of one's being...to merge with the divine within each of us. It seems this listener appreciates the male voices most often than female in a most general sense, and under the accomplished direction of Mr.Christophers the men's voices, especially tenors, stroke harmonic chords and gentled this listener's heart. The arrangements and quality of the individual voices merging as one ensemble voice is absolutely exquisite. The Sixteen express superlative and gifted vocals which are dynamically and skillfully brought to melodic, blossoming bouquet by Mr. Christophers. This CD was simultaneously purchased with Renaissance Music for Inner Peace and selections from both heard on KUSC FM Soul Music's program were my introduction to Harry Christophers and The Sixteen. A superb ensemble that I wished toured the U.S." Report Abuse
