Notes and Editorial Reviews

Deutsche Grammophons Complete Beethoven Edition of 1997 was one of the great events in recording history an 87-CD set that served as a monument to the worlds greatest composer.

Now we are offering, in a limited edition, a box set of Beethoven Masterworks, covering the complete range of Beethovens works in 51 CDs.

The choice of recordings is quite distinct from the 1997 Edition, and CDs are presented in album form, with the original artwork of great Beethoven releases from DG's super-roster of artists.

The Edition: from Symphonies to Folksong Settings, and in between Overtures, Concertos, Piano Trios, String Quartets, Chamber Music for Wind Instruments, String Trios, Cello Sonatas, Violin Sonatas,
Read more Piano Sonatas, Lieder, Masses, rare Large Choral Works, and Fidelio.

The Artists: almost all CDs are individual albums presented in the original jackets by our greatest artists. Some examples: for the Symphonies weve got Abbado, Gardiner, Kleiber, Bernstein and Karajan; for the Piano Concertos, weve got Argerich, Zimerman and Pollini; for the String Quartets Melos, Emerson and Hagen; for the Piano Sonatas Kempff, Barenboim, Gilels and Pollini.

All presented in their original cover art. In this sense, the Edition is quite distinct from the old Beethoven Edition - updated, compact, added-value.

We have, however, taken advantage of the Complete Beethoven by including here some rarities like the much acclaimed Cantatas newly recorded for 1997 by Christian Thielemann and Myung-Wha Chung; and as a Bonus CD a selection of the Folksong Settings, also specially recorded for the 1997 Edition.

Includes 96-page booklet, with a classic article by the great German critic Karl Schumann and artist photos.
