Notes and Editorial Reviews

The première of Der Freischutz in 1821 met with an enthusiastic reception: The story oscillating between reason and outdated rituals reflected the zeitgeist of a society caught up in political turbulence. Weber's tunes with their nod towards the world of the folk song were immensely popular and the musical depiction of 'demonic' events remains exemplary to this day. When this Electrola recording appeared in 1969, critics showered equal praise on the soloists especially on Nilsson's intelligent Agathe and Gedda's vivid portrayal of Max - and on Robert Heger's persuasive conducting.  Finally--At last! August 4, 2013 By T. Brown (Austin, TX) See All My Reviews "I bought this recording of Der Freischutz on vinyl LP in 1973 when it was first released. I was a poor college student who went without food for a few days to afford it but Walter Berry, Nickolai Gedda and Birgit Nilsen together promised something great. Since then I've acquired several other recordings of Der F. but they are embarrassingly bad competition to this recording. Professor Hegar 's conducting is perfection: his pacing of the work cannot be improved on by any of the other conductors who have recorded Der Freischutz. It's an answered prayer that this recording has been released on CD" Report Abuse
