Notes and Editorial Reviews

Gerald Finzi's choral music is very much in a warm post-Elgarian tradition. The most striking examples are For St Cecilia which is full of pageantry, and In terra pax which evokes the Nativity scene and the arrival of the Angel of the Lord in splendour. But his most famous work is Dies natalis, using texts by Thomas Traherne, and Hickox's performance here is made the more memorable by his sensitively passionate soloist, Philip Langridge. Indeed all the soloists here are in splendid voice, not least Benjamin Luxon in the Hardy settings of Earth and Air and Rain, while Bryn Terfel is also engagingly idiomatic in the Shakespearian Garlands. Marriner's Academy plays the sleight but lovely Romance for Read more strings with characteristic finesse to complete a thoroughly worthwhile anthology, given top quality vintage recording.
