Notes and Editorial Reviews

It’s easy to overlook yet another recording of these popular works, but this release has a lot going for it. On evidence here, pianist Christian Ihle Hadland has a blast playing Mozart, nowhere more so than in the cadenzas that he has composed for both concertos. Granted they may not be quite idiomatic: they contain some quite un-Mozartian harmonies and rhythmic quirks, especially that in the first movement of No. 22, which also includes a rather coy anticipation of the principal theme of the finale. And yet, Hadland’s audacity never sounds offensive or wrong, and his original contributions allow his genial character to offer a refreshing view of Mozart’s themes–and that, after all, is the entire point of the solo cadenza, right?

In all other respects the interpretations will not be seen as controversial, but they are delightful. Arvid Engegard has the Oslo Philharmonic playing with plenty of color and punch. The “military” bits in the opening movement of No. 21, for example, have just the right touch of swagger. In the famous slow movement Hadland really shows us how to float a Mozartian cantabile, and finale goes like the wind. In No. 22, with woodwinds well to the fore (clarinets especially), the dialog between solo and orchestra is effortlessly vivacious, disarming in its quasi-operatic give-and-take. Simax provides its usual topnotch engineering, with ideal balances and plenty of naturally telling detail. This is, in sum, one of the more distinctive Mozart concerto discs to come along in quite some time.
