Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Much though I have esteemed Schubert's lieder, I esteem his instrumental works still more highly. If all his compositions were to be destroyed except for two, I would say: rescue the last two symphonies." The composer Antoni?n Dvora?k wrote that in an essay on Franz Schubert in 1894. The significance of Dvora?k's choice depends of course on knowing that in the course of his thirty-one- year lifespan, Schubert composed more than 1,100 works, of which his lieder are surely the best known today. It is easy to overlook the fact that by the age of twenty-one he had already completed six symphonies that tend to play no more than a subordinate role in concert life today. The reason may lie in the fact that they are considerably less Read more demanding technically than Schubert's last two symphonies. That is presumably because the early works were all composed for orchestras made up largely of amateur musicians or Schubert's pupils, such as the orchestra of the municipal boarding school in Vienna in which Schubert himself played for a long time, or the amateur orchestra that had developed from his father's string quartet. At all events, Johannes Brahms, a confessed Schubert admirer who edited the complete edition of Schubert's symphonies for Breitkopf & Ha?rtel in 1884-97, wrote of the first six to the publisher: "I have not revised all too meticulously, since everything is immensely simple and clear (...). I have not concealed from you the fact that I have no particular pleasure in preparing these symphonies for publication. I feel such works or drafts should not be published, but should be preserved out of respect and perhaps copied to make them accessible to others". These early works are generally judged much more positively today, but they nonetheless feature rather seldom on the programmes of the leading orchestras. Read less
