Often thought (certainly by me) to be Henry Purcell’s unfortunate younger brother, Daniel Purcell is now Read more thought to be the greater composer’s cousin. I am not sure that made his career any sweeter, but Daniel did have a career. Born, it is thought, a decade later than Henry, Daniel survived his cousin by 20 years. He was the organist at Magdalen College, Oxford until Henry’s death, when he moved to London. There he worked on at least 40 theatrical productions, played organ, and wrote several large works while gadding about town: “I perceive the tenor of your life to be chiefly in taverns,” a public letter asserted of the composer. The pieces recorded here were published between 1696 and 1710. The sonatas and suites consist of short, mostly lively movements with some pathetic slow movements interspersed. There is little interesting interchange between violin and harpsichord. I find the later works, such as the Solo in A (with continuo) more interesting musically than the earlier pieces, but all of these are professional, tuneful pieces. What is more, everything here, but the three sonatas published in 1698, is receiving its first recording. So this well-played recording is a find for those interested in 17th-century music.
