Notes and Editorial Reviews

"This is a Golem monster of musical compilations... Fans of Boston’s Mission of Burma will appreciate the complex rock textures of Roger C. Miller’s 'The Hundred Buck Stopped Here.' There’s Alex Skolnick’s straight-up blues, followed directly by Josh Lopes’ Tuvanian throat singing. Parisian Rhys Chatham provides a new, shorter version of his The Out-of-Tune Guitar, a piece that is more than likely to have influenced at least a few of the other musicians on the album. David Starobin—the founder of Bridge Records—contributes a lullaby, but for whom is not certain. Seattle’s Del Rey resurrects a mythical Huddie Ledbetter, while Taylor Levine’s 'Fish Eye' sounds like an origin myth of the guitar itself. It’s fine listening to be sure, but Read more the album is not merely for listening. This is old-fashioned-put-the-record-on-hunker-down-on-the-carpet music..." -- Sam Zelitch, icareifyoulisten.com

"Of the sixty-odd names credited, the first to jump off the page alongside that of Starobin himself was none other than Fred Frith... Fielding a hypnotic quasi-improvisation..., Frith soon reasserts himself as the subtly compelling creative entity that captured our attention all those years ago. And there's plenty more to discover from the other contributors, with much avant-garde exploration alongside the occasional triumphant shred and even a reggae take on 'House of the Rising Sun.'" -- Paul Fowles, Classical Guitar [5/2013]

In October of 2010, guitarists Nick Didkovsky and Chuck O’Meara bought a used $100 electric guitar online. They didn’t know what it sounded like or if it even worked, but were charmed by its no-name vibe. After receiving the instrument, they contacted a few friends about writing and recording a piece on the guitar. Word spread quickly, and within weeks, the $100 Guitar Project was born. Over two years, sixty-five guitarists wrote and recorded a piece on the instrument, each passing the guitar on to the next player (the guitar traveled all over the USA, including Hawaii, and to western Europe as well). Stylistically, the players come from every corner of the guitar-playing world: classical to blues; jazz to country; rock to experimental. Donating their services to a good cause, a royalty on every sale of the $100 Guitar Project will be paid to CARE, a leading organization fighting global poverty. The 65 guitarists are: Andy Aledort, Greg Anderson, Ron Anderson, Joe Berger, Michael Bierylo, Biota, Blancah, Joe Bouchard, Bill Brovold, Phil Burk, Juan Parra Cancino, Marco Cappelli, Marty Carlson, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe, Rhys Chatham, Barry Cleveland, Nels Cline, Amy Denio, Jon Diaz, Nick Didkovsky, Thomas Dimuzio, Bruce Eisenbeil, Karl Evangelista, Janet Feder, Caroline Feldmeier, Ken Field, Fred Frith, Wiek Hijmans, Mark Hitt, Henry Kaiser, Raymond T.
