Notes and Editorial Reviews

[These] two discs use a fortepiano accompaniment, the most politically correct choice at this moment; they also offer the largest selections. Both Judith Nelson and Carolyn Watkinson are renowned specialists in eighteenth-century music with many recordings to their credit; both have sung with authentic-instrument ensembles as well as conventional groups. Watkinson is usually considered a contralto, but is listed by Virgin Classics as a mezzo-soprano; she sings the same line as the three sopranos, without transposition. Nelson interprets the canzonettas in an easy, natural manner, using her sweet soprano in an almost folksy way. Watkinson sings out more dramatically, in a grand, almost operatic style; this also means pacing most of the songs Read more more slowly than Nelson, and slowing up for points of emphasis and ends of phrases. Each enunciates clearly and pays close attention to the meanings of the texts. Both fortepianists are also highly respected musicians; the accompaniments match the different interpretations; Glen Wilson's playing is bold and dramatic, while Elaine Thornburgh's is more subtle. The recordings are consistent with the performances: Virgin places us in a reverberant concert hall; Koch has us gathered in a more intimate space—our own salon, perhaps.

Similar attitudes are applied to the cantata: Watkinson takes four minutes more than Nelson— most of the extra time spent in the recitatives—and has Arianna making a big public statement of her grief, surprise, and anger at being abandoned. Nelson's more intimate fashion has Arianna addressing her plaints directly to Theseus, or perhaps just to herself (“But whom am I addressing? . . . Theseus cannot hear me.“). Virgin supplies four-language texts for the cantata and three—leaving out Italian—for the songs. Koch gives us only English for the songs, with Italian and English for the cantata. Both discs are quite fine, their great difference no measure of either artistic merit or shortcoming.
