Top-notch Rachmaninov December 24, 2012
By V. Guernon (South Kingstown, RI) See All My Reviews
"Andre Previn recorded the Rachmaninov symphonies in the early 1970's, not long after he became principal conductor of the London Symphony. His first recording, that of the Symphony #2, was the first recorded uncut version of the symphony, and it established Previn as a major conducting talent. Previn is masterful in balancing the seething passion and the masive structure of this symphony. His subsequent recordings of the other two symphonies and the Symphonic Dances only further enhanced his reputation as the finest Rachmaninov interpreter of his generation. EMI provided Previn with some of its best sound in these recordings. Rachmaninov doesn't get much better than this. Highly recommended."
