Notes and Editorial Reviews

Among the remarkable though rarely heard works of Swiss music in the first half of the 20th Century, the oratorio The Year (1941) was composed by Willy Burkhard during the composer's convalescence after a long illness. It is a work full of life-affirmation on a text by the Swiss writer Hermann Hiltbrunner. Burkhard himself called it his masterpiece. Burkhard's modern oratorios stand among the fine Swiss oratorios of Hermann Suter, Arthur Honegger and Frank Martin. Quoting Burkhard, these works explore a "cross-section of our time" and are also a reflection of an inner "spiritual life". - Musique Suisses Among the remarkable though rarely heard works of Swiss music in the first half of the 20th Century, the oratorio The Year (1941) was composed by Willy Burkhard during the composer's convalescence after a long illness.
