Text and Translation)
This album follows a plan identical in format to that of Charles Daniels and Fretwork on Harmonia Mundi 907334, incorporating a mix of Senfl’s viol consort songs, and instrumentals. La Caccia expands matters with a recorder consort and several plucked string instruments. The result has a lighter, more varied texture than in Daniels/Fretwork, abetted by Denys’s

preference for higher pitching in identical songs.
They don’t share much content, but the little they do indicates Daniels’s preference for slightly slower tempos. In “Ach Eislein,” this allows a greater emphasis on phrasing, while in “Im meyen,” he employs a greater variety of dynamics to give life to the raunchy text. Neither tenor, however, conveys the charm necessary to bring it to life; and Denys, who is quite affecting in the sorrows of “Mag ich Unglück” and “Mein’ Fleiss und Müeh,” is completely stone-faced when it comes to this bawdry.
Like the Daniels/Fretwork disc, too, Denys/La Caccia supplies multiple recompositions based on the same thematic material. The expected “Tandernac” appears both as an instrumental in four parts, for instance, and a series of parts in tandem with the religious song, “Felices, quicumque deo confidere possunt.”
Asked to choose between the two discs, I wouldn’t—nor, for that matter, would I care to forego Cordes/Weser-Renaissance (CPO 999648-2), with a small vocal ensemble in lieu of a single vocalist, and including a much broader mix of instruments. Simply put, each of these discs brings something distinctive to the table. And in the case of Denys/La Caccia, it’s a combination of Denys’s attractively bright tone and enunciation, and La Caccia’s varied accompaniments and its sensitive treatment of pure instrumentals. Recommended.
