Anyone who tries to find out more about the composer Ernst Toch will soon realize that it is not an easy task. No monograph is to be found on the shelves of leading bookstores, and even in the big libraries only a handful of scientific works can be consulted. However, almost all publications quote a sentence by Toch with which he characterized his late years: “I am the twentieth century’s most forgotten composer.” In his youth he experienced the Habsburg Empire’s metropolis in what was probably her most exciting time ever.
