Notes and Editorial Reviews

Some of the world’s greatest sacred masterpieces are heard on this disc, performed by some of the world’s leading vocal ensembles. The journey ranges from Thomas Tallis’s extraordinary Spem in alium to César Franck’s immortal Panis angelicus. Pergolesi’s Stabat mater is a masterpiece of the early eighteenth century. Mozart, who as a 14-year-old had copied out Allegri’s Miserere from memory, is represented by his beautiful Ave verum corpus. It is impossible to omit the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria from a journey that crosses geographical borders and spans the centuries.  Sacred Music July 28, 2014 By Tony Heaton (Doncaster, South Yorkshire) See All My Reviews "I ordered this CD after hearing "Spem in Alium" on a BBC programme (in England). Looked through the titles on Arkiv, and it was included on this CD plus some other favourites of mine. This version is not the same as the one I heard. Thomas Talis wrote Spem in Alium for 40 voices - all slightly different, but starting with one, with the rest joining in one by one until the final 40 voices. However, I like this one and all the other selection on the CD. My Son (not a church goer) heard it and mentioned that it reminded him of church, which is the whole idea. Altogether quite satisfied. By the way, Spem in Alium (latin) means "Hope for Another" J A Heaton" Report Abuse
