That Harry Lidsle is a fine tubist is beyond question. He is principal tuba of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra in Finland, a post he has held since 1990, apart from a two-year sabbatical to teach and tour. He creates a variety of colors, plays with agility, and he is naturally musical, although I have heard tuba players with a smoother, more even legato. He also demonstrates wit where appropriate (such as his delightful timing of the final low blatt of Jonel Dumitru’s Rumanian Dance ). This disc is probably of interest to other tubists, who will enjoy the repertoire and Lidsle’s approach to it. But for the rest of us its appeal is limited. As imaginative as Lidsle is, the tuba is limited as a solo instrument. He does create a variety of colors, but that is within the limits imposed on him by the nature of the instrument. The title of the disc, “Around Europe,” is explained in Lidsle’s own notes, where he tips his hat to different tuba players and teachers in each country represented by one of the composers. That too is likely to mean something to other tuba players, but it doesn’t connect with the rest of us—and the notes focus much more on that approach than on telling us anything about the music.

There are, of course, some familiar works here in transcriptions (including the ever present “Nessun dorma”), but most of them do not really suit the tuba. There is no getting around the fact that the tuba is a heavy instrument, and the second of the Queen of the Night’s two arias from The Magic Flute could not sound more wrong than it does here, despite Lidsle’s undeniable agility. The labored, heavy-handed rendition of the famed slow movement from Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez is, quite frankly, deadly. It also must be said that the 72 minutes of the rather unvaried sound of the tuba becomes wearing.

Not that there aren’t moments of delight. Vittorio Monti’s Czardas is perhaps the high point of the disc—sheer virtuosity, lighthearted fun, and a ridiculously glorious high note at the end. The bonus track with the group Ultra Brass does provide some additional variety. The recorded sound seems well balanced between piano and tuba, and natural sounding. The program notes by Lidsle are of no value to any non-tubist, and the disc’s identification of pieces is not always clear (the Mozart aria is simply given as “The Queen of the Night”).
