Klemperer’s readings are deliberate, granitic, weighty, compelling, and gloriously large in scale. They are realized by a Philharmonia in excellent form (the
Read more deterioration came in mid-1960s), with an especially striking complement of winds.

The virtues of the set are evident in an utterly extraordinary Eroica. Dramatic, almost painful, it is a monument of struggle – the first movement is intense to the end, while the second has a palpable urgency, and a grip so strong one almost can’t breathe. The Fifth, too, is exemplary: not fierce or driven, but inexorable, with a grand finale of wonderful expansiveness.

The recordings, most of which were made in Kingsway Hall, offer excellent detail and atmosphere. Though a little shy in the bass, they are tonally quite appealing, and Klemperer’s preference for a left/right separation of the first and second violins adds noticeably to the sense of spaciousness. Originally produced by Walter Legge, they have been brilliantly remastered. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection, Recordings reissued in 2013 as Warner, 404275.
