Notes and Editorial Reviews

Result of a historical collaboration between composer Michael Mauldin and British harpist Andrew Lowings, who began a project to construct a replica of the Gold Lyre of Ur. Moved by the instrument's legacy and the narrative possibilities of the project, Mauldin composed The Last Musician of Ur for orchestra and harp, crafting a flowing narrative following the last musician to play the historic instrument as he is torn between inescapable destruction and the hope of timeless, international peace. This EP offers Mauldin's piece, along with the historical background of the project.  An Extraordinary Creative Collaboration, by Josep June 24, 2014 By Michael Mauldin (Albuquerque, NM) See All My Reviews "American composer Michael Mauldin (b. 1947), in collaboration with British harpist Andrew Lowings and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, have produced one of the most striking and memorable CDs to be released in recent years. The Gold Lyre of Ur, created five millennia ago and discovered at the site of a mass suicide in 1929, was looted from the Baghdad Museum and destroyed in 2003. Longings, who arranged for an authentic replica to be constructed, was delighted when Mauldin graciously volunteered to compose a new work in support of this important project. *The Last Musician of Ur* is not a concerto movement but a concerted work of approximately seven minutes' duration cast in a distinctively accessible contemporary tonal idiom. The pedal harp plays an important role, weaving luminous filaments through a rich symphonic tapestry evoking the history and culture of an ancient civilization whose legacy has been imperiled by the ravages of modern warfare. Maestro Petr Vronský deftly interprets the brilliant imagery of Mauldin's score, which ranges from the writhingly tumultuous to the redolently mystical, and intermittently references an ancient Hurrian song translated from the cuneiform by noted Assyriologist Anne Kilmer. The CD is packaged in a beautifully printed jacket featuring images of the extraordinary bull-headed "Lyre of Ur." Informative liner notes document the background and creative process informing this uniquely worthwhile project. --Josheph D. Ford" Report Abuse
