Overlooked Violin Concertos May 6, 2017 By owen  ryan (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "Myaskovsky wrote his concerto in 1938, revising it in '39. It is in the Romantic vein, lacking the Socialist Realism enforced by Stalin's cultural goons. As Penguin Guide stated it ''is one of the most appealing and lyrical Russian concertos. Its neglect is quite unaccountable.'' Weinberg was friends with both Myaskovsky and Shostakovich. His excellent concerto is demanding of the soloist. Ilya Grubert easily lives up to the virtuostic demands of this colorful piece. This is a real undiscovered gem. Yablonsky Has forged his pick-up orchestra into a first class ensemble. He provides flawless support for these concertos." Report Abuse
