Notes and Editorial Reviews

After devoting recordings to Ravel and Poulenc, Jos van Immerseel returns to French music, tackling Debussy and his most famous orchestral works. He relies on historic instruments with the aim of blending a singular vision of these scores with a highly rigorous approach.

"[I]t's the orchestral Images that gains most from the brighter, rawer colours of this performance, with the myriad subtleties of Debussy's scoring more beguiling than ever... Van Immerseel resists the temptation to turn it into a real orchestral showpiece, but there's enough flair and imagination to make his performance compelling."

approach with caution May 3, 2013 By sherwin c. (Santa Barbara, CA) See All My Reviews "This pretentious release attempts to offer performances with instruments of Debussy;'s time. All well and good if they are properly integrated into the performance, but some are much too faint (brass), so one is uncertain about the real timbre. But van Immerseel, however,is erratic not merely in exposing instruments or merging them into textures, his phrasing and timing are weird--especially the timing. Is it impossible to play the Images well? Well, almost. Reiner did Iberia well, and Dutoit offered a good modern set. But then there's Rattle, with idiosyncratic ritards, accelerandos, and other distortions probably designed to make the piece sound "new" Salonen is better in these respects, but not by much. Why do the British like Rattle when he's merely flashy and sacrifices good music-making to novelty? His interpretation, like his La Mer, is unbelievably bad, Gramophone to the contrary (follow these with the score!). Other bad ones: Ansermet, Martinon, Tortelier, Boulez." Report Abuse
