SCHEIN Fontana d’Israel Michel Laplénie, cond; Sagittarius HORTUS 090 (60:53 Text and Translation)

Here we have another single-disc selection of the outstanding book of motets by Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630), usually known in German as Israelsbrünnlein . This program includes 17 of the 26 works, similar to the earlier collections by Martin Flämig ( Read more style="font-style:italic">Fanfare 19:3), Philippe Herreweghe (20:4), and the original issue of Hans-Christoph Rademann (25:4 and 36:2). This disc uses the original Italian form of the book’s title because, as Rademann also explained, Schein modeled his music on the “Italian-madrigalian manner” that came into Germany with composers (such as Schütz) who had studied in Italy. The complete set is poor value on two CDs, and only Hermann Max (13:6) fills out the second disc with the music of other, later composers. If you want only enough of these motets to fill one disc, Herreweghe’s, with 21 selections running almost 80 minutes, is the real bargain. Herreweghe’s ensemble uses one voice to a part with a continuo group of four players, virtually the same as Laplénie’s group with three players. (Flämig is in another league entirely, directing a large choir of men and boys with 22 players on period instruments, not a performance that could be called madrigalian. Martin Behrmann’s pioneering LP set, using a large adult choir and 14 players, is long gone.)

Since 13 selections are common to Laplénie and Herreweghe, their very similar styles of performance are competitive, and I would not fault the choice of the more generous selection that Herreweghe offers. But Laplénie is worth hearing, for his interpretations are subtle and well shaped. If you prefer the full collection at whatever price it may be offered, only Manfred Cordes (28:5) uses an ensemble similar to these two, while Rademann and Max both use several voices to a part with a continuo group. Yet as I noted recently, Rademann’s group is so responsive and flexible that I could forgive anyone who is not so purist as to insist on one voice to a part. Laplénie has done a commendable job, but Herreweghe, Cordes, and the reissued (complete) Rademann offer stiff competition.
