Notes and Editorial Reviews

"...Keith Lewis fills the title role with dulcet ardor. The choral work is superb. In sum, a big screen, Technicolor production in the manner of Solti's 1981 neon account with von Stade, Riegel, and van Dam, which the present set rivals keenly without quite overtopping...high-water marks for general brilliance and sonic immediacy in the discography of the last 15 years or so and thus may be recommended with more or less enthusiasm."

Fabulous In Every Respect January 11, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Here is a Berlioz opera to savor and cherish. With a magnificent orchestral score performed to perfection by the Philharmonia Orchestra, an excellent chorus, and above all the top notch cast, this DG recording sparkles with melodic passion and emotional twists and turns. Anne Sofie Von Otter's breathtaking aria at the beginning of Part 4, Keith Lewis's steady portrayal of the emotionally desperate Faust, and Bryn Terfel's similarly excellent Mephistopheles highlight a performance that never fails to engage the listener. At just over 2 hours in length, Berlioz for once packages his great work into a realistically manageable structure. All in all, this is a recording sure to satisfy any opera fan, and I definitely recommend it." Report Abuse
