- New York Times, (August 19, 2010)

"It is, of course sung in English in Andrew Porter's clear and clever translation, by a true ensemble, singing words that we and (more importantly) they can understand in performances honed over many years spent together in the rehearsal studio and on stage. As such, it is that rare thing on disc, a genuinely unique record of a real artistic achievement - one that those of us who experienced it

Unexpectedly outstanding; great to start with thi February 11, 2014 By Stephen Marmer (Los Angeles, CA) See All My Reviews "First, these are great performances. Goodall conducts superbly and the singers are absolutely outstanding. For many the drawback will be that it is sung in English. I generally listen to The Ring sung in German but after listening to this recording numbers of times, I appreciate more what they are actually saying. In fact, the way they translated the libretto fits perfectly with the music. Now when I return to a German language version I can hear it simultaneously in both languages as well as marvel at the way the music fits the words. Clearly this should not be your only Ring. Everyone should own the Solti and also one of the earlier recordings, such as Clemens Krauss or Furtwangler, as well as one of the newer DVD's such as Boulez or Barenboim or Levine. But the Goodall stands on its own as an outstanding performance that will make listening to any other more meaningful." Report Abuse
