Blessed with a golden-age voice (The Sunday Times) that routinely inspires comparisons with legendary singers from earlier eras, Joseph Calleja follows the success of The Maltese Tenor with a tribute to one of the most popular tenors of all time; the unique star of the Hollywood musical - Mario Lanza.
This is an album that Joseph Calleja has always wanted to record. As a young boy in Malta he saw Lanza in the cult film The Great Caruso and was so captivated that he gave up his predilection for Metallica and Iron Maiden, and followed his dream to become an opera singer.
Born in America to Italian parents, Mario Lanza was an International screen idol and recording star with a fan base to rival Elvis Presley. TheRead more album includes all the Lanza evergreens including Be My Love (from The Toast of New Orleans) and You'll Never Walk Alone (Carousel) as well as opera arias made famous by his movie performances, including Addio alla Madre (Cavalleria rusticana) and Nessun Dorma.

Me encanto!!January 8, 2013By Maria C A. (RICHMOND, CA)See All My Reviews"Yes, I loved it at first hear! I remember very well Mario Lanza (though some times the movies/recitals were kind of silly). The women in my family used to love him by the end of the 50's. But Joseph Calleja is another matter: he is one of the best tenors of these days; he sings in the best opera theaters; has a beautiful voice and a strong personality. Highly recommendable CD!"Report Abuse
Calleja Sings Lanza's December 26, 2012By Thomas I. (Lebanon, PA)See All My Reviews"I've always enjoyed some of the songs that Mario Lanza chose to perform: The Loveliest Night of the Year, Be My Love, Romberg's Serenade, Parlami d'amore, Mariu, etc. It's quite interesting to learn of Joseph Calleja's great admiration for this tenor and to hear his own versions of this material. In the past I've always been somewhat bothered by Joseph Calleja's quick vibrato; however, for some reason, it doesn't bother me too much when he performs songs of this type. There are also a number of my favorite arias on this disc: Amor ti vieta and The Flower Song from CARMEN among them."Report Abuse
