Notes and Editorial Reviews

The music on this disc is typically lovely, and even the earliest piece here, the Serenade in A minor of 1898, foreshadows the composer to come. Check out the scherzo second movement (sound clip). Is there any doubt who wrote it? Both this piece and the equally charming 1900/1 Bucolic Suite certainly deserve to be heard now and then, and they are given first class performance by Martin Yates and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Isn’t it amazing what we sometimes find when a composer dies?

As for the later pieces, Dark Pastoral dates from 1942/3 and was orchestrated by David Matthews. It’s a single movement from a projected cello concerto, and it’s very nicely played by soloist Guy Johnston. Folk Songs of the Four
Read more Seasons is an orchestral arrangement by Roy Douglas of a 1949 occasional work that originally included choral parts. It was made in 1952, during the composer’s lifetime, and for some reason has been neglected until now. The various folk tunes are sumptuously arranged in the composer’s late style, with plenty of harp and tuned percussion.

As with the other pieces on the disc, these late works are all beautifully realized by both conductor and orchestra, and the sonics are typically full and brilliant. This disc is a mandatory acquisition for Vaughan Williams collectors.

Unfamiliar RVW April 23, 2013 By roger horn (Clarion, PA) See All My Reviews "Ralph Vaugh Williams has been one of my favorite composers for many and many a year and so I am curious about everything he wrote. This recording presents several unfamiliar works and is certainly worthwhile listening for RVW adherents if little that is startlingly new or different is heard. It would hardly do as an introduction for those unfamiliar with his music, but for for the experienced listener it is a delight." Report Abuse
