Notes and Editorial Reviews

To mark the occasion of what would have been Sir Georg Solti’s 100th birthday, Sony Classical presents Sir Georg Solti Conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a new 3-DVD box set featuring footage of live concert performances from Tokyo. One of the greatest conductors of the 20th century and recipient of thirty-one Grammy Awards®, Solti was the principle conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1969 to 1991, one of the longest and most successful partnerships in music history. Their repertoire for these concerts consists exclusively of audience favorites: Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony, Mahler’s Fifth, Beehoven’s Fifth Symphony and more. A special highlight of this set is Solti’s introduction to Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Read more Pictures at an Exhibition, which is a rare glimpse of this charismatic conductor’s personality.  A DVD is not a cd July 30, 2013 By A. White (Chicago, IL) See All My Reviews "Call me ignorant, but I did not know one has to select a format when ordering, saw the titles I wanted, ordered 2 DVD's instead of cd's, which were "unplayable" on my system, so had to return them. Return process was painless and refund prompt. I learned something about musical formats. Ann P. White" Report Abuse
Must Have January 15, 2013 By David R. (Westerville, OH) See All My Reviews "As one who was fortunate to be in the audience at what turned out to be Solti's final concert in the US(with the Cleveland Orchestra) this set brings back pleasant memories. Solti was a dyanamo but also brought sensitivity to his interpretations, especailly during his later years. I highly recommend this set as but one example of his artistry. The Beethoven 5th is on here which was the second half of the program in Cleveland(first half Bartok Concerto for Orchestra). Long live Sir Georg!" Report Abuse
