Notes and Editorial Reviews

Putting my head above a parapet, I have to say that these performances of Prokofiev's three 'War' Sonatas… eclipse all others on record – even those tirelessly and justifiably celebrated performances by Richter and Gilels… [Giltburg's] blistering, all-inclusive technique allows him to range from the merest whisper… to an elemental uproar that never degenerates into coarseness or mere violence.

Superlative Prokofiev March 9, 2013 By D. Mount (West Roxbury, MA) See All My Reviews "Never heard of this guy, bought this CD on the strength of the Gramophone and UK reviews. These interpretations compare favorably with the greatest, only with better sound quality. I've always found recordings of the Precipitato from the 7th sonata a bit polite compared to Pollini, who is ~30 seconds faster that Ashkenazy and Gavrilov. Giltburg is 10 seconds faster than Pollini, but doesn't degenerate into banging on the piano the way that Pollini does. But more than that, he gets the spirit of these dark sonatas just right. An indispensable disc. If you want one single CD of key Prokofiev Piano Sonatas, this is the one." Report Abuse
Disappointment November 30, 2012 By Bevan Davies (Kennebunk, ME) See All My Reviews "This recording has been overrated in the media. It does not compare favorably to Pollini, Richter, and others. The recorded sound is unpleasant, too." Report Abuse
